We cannot afford to underestimate the outstanding achievement of Brampton Manor Academy this year. 95% of their 470 6th form students achieved A*/A’s. That’s phenomenal for a state school whose catchment area is mainly made up of disadvantaged immigrants and asylum migrants. Many an accolade has been given to the students for their hard work and achievements, and quite rightly so.
But educators such as I know that such displays of excellence do not come from the bottom, they come from the top! As Steven Bartlett has said, “The values, the culture, everything starts from the top … if the culture is strong enough, new people become the culture; if the culture is weak, the culture becomes the new people!”
Hence, I want to give a shout-out to the exemplary, tenaciously inclusive leadership of the Nigerian headteacher (Executive Principal), Dr Dayo Olukoshi OBE, and to all his teachers and staff who believe in his liberating vision and mission for Brampton. The organic connection between his background and that of his students is no accident to the measure of his belief, vision and success. We all can take a leaf out of his book – of creating an inclusive culture of unlimited opportunities. And that’s what my work is all about!
I bet many people with backgrounds such as mine (and I dare say beyond) reading this post wish they had a headteacher like Dr Dayo Olukoshi OBE!! More power to you, my brother!
