Allyship by remote control is not sustainable!

We sometimes become aware of #identity issues through work. By identity, I’m referring to #gender#race#LGBTQ+, #disability, etc. For many #employees, it might be the first time that they’ve come to learn about inequity among these #minoritised groups. They get converted. They engage. They become invested. And they join the struggle, as it were. They watch a few #documentaries. They read some #books. They become allies. Their intentions are good.

Take Ingrid, for example. (I got her permission to share this story, but have changed her name.) She’s a deputy director of #peopleandculture of a large #organisation. She expanded her career in #HR by making a conscientious effort to learn about these different groups and be an ally for them. At first, she was zealous and active. But then she found it difficult to sustain her passion. She was running out of gas, especially when it came to fronting #race.

Why race? Well, as a #white#Brit, she hadn’t much exposure to #black and #brown people, growing up. Then at work, her knowledge of #socialjustice was arrested and she became an avid ally.

However, Ingrid soon discovered in our #coaching session that being an ally by remote control is not sustainable. Fronting and protecting the rights of #minoritised groups within multicultural communities could not be sustained without further investment. It felt tokenistic, anaemic. She was running on the ether of hypothesis and theory and realised that she required the lifeblood of human relations. #Academic knowledge was not sufficient. #Experiential knowledge was what was needed to sustain her integrity. You can’t do it by remote control.

We eventually settled on some initiatives. If you were in my seat, what would you recommend? (Draw from your own experience of marginalisation – sports, hobbies, habits, professions, personal characteristics, etc… How might someone be a better ally of your interest?) Remember, the focus is more than just being respectful to other people. It is on being an ally.
