“Justice is what love looks like in public!” These were the words with which I began my talk at a Justice Summit hosted by the Development and Humanitarian Agency, ADRA.
Here, I shared how diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (#DEIB) need to channel the way #humanitarian agencies/ #NGOs deliver their services, especially given that their origins were compelled by the colonial optic. However, I’m referring to a DEIB defined by the impulse of #social #justice.
No impulse, no use!
I wish you could have been there to hear how I broke this down with case studies. For example, I showed that while I’m not naive to think that my work can change the game, my work has chipped away at the nature of the game! (Yes, we can talk about this more, if you like.)
I ended the talk with this thought:
In all my travels around the world, I have noticed that there are five basic desires of all human beings:
1. People want to love – belonging
2. People want to be loved – belonging
3. People want to be respected – diversity
4. People want to be heard – inclusion
5. People want to be treated fairly – equity
This principle crosses over to all business and government sectors. The question is, how can you bring business impact to your organisation with this approach to DEIB?
